Post 8 - Smithgall Woods State Park/Helen, GA/Habersham Winery

May 14th we took a ride over to Smithgall Woods Visitor Center where we sat in on an educational class about Insects & Amphibians. It began with an power-point presentation in the beautiful vistor's center that was full of preserved wild-life and photos, then we took a ride down to several ephemeral ponds and caught baby salamanders, dragon-fly nymphs and larger salamanders. The education center housed specimens used in their children's education classes.

Dragon-fly Nymph

Large tadpole

Larger salamander

Tarantula

Afterwards we rode into Helen, Ga, and old German town, where we had lunch at the Old Heidelberg Restaurant. We plan to go back and tube down the river which runs through town.

We ended the day with a wine-tasting at Habersham Winery where we tasted local-made cabernet, sauvignon blanc, and merlot wines.
